What wonderful news Mr John....Thank you.

JC

Judy thank you for the link on the little hawk...so very interesting...

JC

Eagles at nest..

Chris

We should be informed about the turbines since our eagles are involved in a 5 year program to understand migration along the Mississippi river and how wind turbine farms built in Iowa could impact the eagle migration.

No wonder Mercury is so hungry when he comes to the nest at night he is flying all over the place. I bet he is learning how to fish too.

Mavis

Ohhh...that's not good! Someone needs to have a talk with Mercury! He needs to stay out of town and stick to the river. He doesn't know about power poles and cars and big buildings with glass windows...and planes. He needs to stay "country"!

Excited to see the other two are making headway with their flying. I think I saw 2 kids hidden in the trees on TTV just then. One below the long, horizonal limb below the old nest and one the the left of the nest. Hard to tell but I think that is them.

Star and Sky...they are doing so good. Star loves to travel. Figured Sky would be heading home to his old stomping grounds. Maybe he is waiting for the Mayflies to come and go first.

Much appreciate the updates on all 5, Mr. John. Just got through with the live update from Mr. Sasse on the little hawk and came back to find a new thread! Nice!

Mavis

The kid was looking for food scraps...there are not any! He is on the overlook now. I have a feeling a drop and run will be the only way to deliver this afternoon.

JC

Mavis when I saw Eagles in the nest..Justice was on the TP and two kids were in the nest...not sure if he brought food..if he did it wasn't much..

Mavis

Thanks, JC. I missed that part! I tuned in to just see the one left in the nest.

Mavis

I don't see any of them anywhere now.

Carol C

Mercury flew right over my house. WOW!!
My sister in law was on interstate 80 yesterday & saw 9 wind turbine blades on trucks going down the highway. Don't know where they were going.

Carol C

Mr. John your going to be busy keeping track of 5.

Mavis

You should start leaving a fish on your deck rail, Carol...he may stop in for lunch tomorrow!

Chris

Carol after he flew over your house he probably saw the turbine at Blackhawk College and made a quick turn around home.

JC

Carol that's nice...wish you could have seen him...I was up near the Wisconsin River today and saw several eagles and juvies soaring along on the thermals...they are so beautiful against the blue sky..hard to keep your eyes on the road at those moments...

Carol C

I'm going to the river tomorrow & I hope I can see them flying.
Chris yea he probably did. One from last year did the same thing. There are nests on the Rock river too.
My place is getting painted & new blacktop. I'm trapped in here. lol

Judith H

Interesting today the live broadcast about the hawk. I was surprised to hear Eagle Biologist David Hancock say once the eaglets fledge, the parents only care for them for about a week. The parents then leave and the kids are on their own, they don't know how to hunt so they're scavengers for the first year. It's the reverse at our nest and I think ours have a better chance of surviving.

JC

The shadow falling on the lower left corner of the nest makes it look like darkened wood...makes me think someone roasted marshmallows over a small fire...in that little spot...

JC

Judy I thought the same thing...I recall looking in at the dale hollow nest early on..their were three hatches at that nest...but only one parent fed them...the other would bring in food but take off...the youngest just received so little and the oldest got fater and fater......the young one did eventually die...survival of the fittest was obvious at that nest...
Liberty and Justice compliment one another so well...they are remarkable parents....

JC

I see my spelling is off...fatter and fatter...would be correct...

JC

I'm signing off enjoy the evening...

Katy

Wow, a lot to catch up on.
Great update Mr. John! Seems a tad early for Merc to be venturing across the river, but he is the eldest of the three.

Had a GREAT day on the kayak. Saw a fledgling hawklet and both parents. Baby Redtail Hawks sound just like eaglets, watched 'em for a couple hours. Was surprised to hear the familiar sqwuee coming from a fledgling hawk.

Mavis

Katy, when the baby hawk who is being raised by the eagles started squeeing...I thought the hawk learned to mimic the adoptive parents. I really did not realize they actually do sound alike. Maybe that is what saved it's life..he started squeeing and the eagles thought he was one of theirs. Just my take on it...I have no way of knowing what really happened. Glad you had a good day on the water.

2 kids on the nest...

Katy

Yeah Mavis, I heard it the second I stepped outta the truck, thought, that sounds like an eaglet. No nesting eagles here!
Then I saw where it was coming from. Very Cool! Never heard a hawklet squee before.

See 2 in the nest, one eating at something, the other looking for scraps.

Carol C

Dad brought in a nice fish & woosh one was right on it. Then another tried but no luck. 2 still there.
Nice to see hawklet doing so good.
Katy that would be fun. I've never tried it.
